Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve (NAS)

Another nod of thanks to Rob Martin for supplying me with this sample of the new Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve, the no-age-statement rum-cask-finished variant of Glenlivet. Bottled at 40% (c'mon Glenlivet!), probably colored, probably chill filtered. I am not a giant fan of rum finished whiskies, but I'm willing to give this a fair shake. Let's see how it does.

Aberlour 12 Year (Classic Cask)

I quite like Aberlour's core flavors (orchards and orchards of rich fruit), and I absolutely love their monster sherry bomb Abunadh. But I've never had an independent bottling of their spirit until now (thanks to Rob Martin for the bottle). This comes from bottler The Classic Cask, and is aged 12 years in an "oak hogshead." Unsure if this implies ex-bourbon or ex-sherry. Bottled at 43%.

Campbeltown Loch Blended Scotch Whisky

This is a blend of Springbank and Longrow whiskies, from Campbeltown distillery Springbank, bottled at 40%, and priced aggressively. I love Springbank, and have never once had a bad pour from any of their offerings. Supposedly this is aged about 5 years. Let's get right down to it:

Glendullan 15 Year

I have never had anything by Diageo-owned Speyside distillery Glendullan, which they place under their "Singleton" umbrella, and aim squarely at the United States market - and so I'm most curious to try this 15 year expression. Glendullan is most often found as part of blends like Old Parr and William's. Coming in at a rather tepid 40% ABV, mostly ex-bourbon, a little bit ex-French oak. Probably colored, probably chill-filtered. How is Glendullan?

Craigellachie 12 Year (SMWS 44.133 "The Dram of the Falling Leaves")

I loved the previous Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottling of Craigellachie so much, I bought the next one they released as well. This one is aged 12 years in ex-bourbon, bottled at 57% ABV, craft presentation, and named "The Dram of the Falling Leaves." Let's see how it stacks up against the previous bottle I tried, "The Pink Lady Makes Pastry."

Inchmurrin 13 Year (SMWS 122.66 "Dark and Flaming")

This was one of those Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) bottlings that I just couldn't pass up - a Loch Lomond (under their Inchmurrin imprint) aged for 11 years in ex-bourbon casks and then ... drumroll please ... another 2 years in a new oak heavy char #4 "alligator" casks. It is pretty unusual to find a #4 in scotch in general (more common in bourbon), let alone in an independent bottling like this. I simply had to try it. Bottled at a very stiff 64.4%, in typical craft presentation, nicknamed "Dark and Flaming." Let's see what alligator char does to a typically sweet, vanilla-forward spirit...

BenRiach "The Smoky Twelve" 12 Year

BenRiach is one of those curious cases where I had an independent bottling before I ever had the official distillery offering. And the independent bottling, from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, was fantastic ... so I'm making amends. This is the lightly peated 12 year, named "The Smoky Twelve," and tripled-casked - ex-bourbon, ex-sherry, and - most intriguingly - ex-Marsala. Bottled at 46%, natural color, and I think un-chill filtered.

Bruichladdich Bere Barley 2010

Being a fan of Bruichladdich, and having recently enjoyed a few of their offerings, I jumped at the chance to get this Bere Barley 2010. Bere is an ancient six-row type of grain that is little used anymore, and this particular crop of bere comes from the Orkney Islands. Aged for 8 years, unpeated, all ex-bourbon casks, bottled at 50% (everyone should do this), and in craft presentation (no color, no chill filtration). How does the bere stack up against the Islay barley?

anCnoc Cutter (NAS)

According to my blog history, I haven't had anCnoc since ... 2014! Seven years, too long for this Highland single malt. Pronounced "an-nock" (I feel every lead-in for this distillery must start with that wild name, right?), this is a discontinued part of their peated line. The current expression, I think, is called "Peatheart," which is pretty good. I really want to try the also-discontinued Flaughter, but can't find it near me for a decent price. This however, I got for a steal. Peated to 20.5 ppm, non-chill filtered, uncolored, appears to be ex-bourbon, and bottled at 46%. Here we go:

Laphroaig Quarter Cask (2nd Take)

Laphroaig's Quarter Cask is aged for 5 years in ex-bourbon casks, then transferred to quarter casks - which, just as they sound like, are casks a quarter the size of a normal cask - for about 7 months. Making this quite a young whisky indeed, but also a powerful, muscular one... yet not without nuance. Bottled at a very pleasing 48%, barrier filtered but not chill filtered, and colored with E150 (!?), let's see how it does 7 years after my last review...

Glenturret 6 Year (SMWS 16.46 "Cooking on a Rusty Grill")

This is my first experience with Glenturret, a distillery fairly south in the Highlands. An independent bottle presented by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS), this is peated, aged for 6 years in a re-charred hogshead and bottled at a very stiff 64.9%. Nicknamed "Cooking on a Rusty Grill." Let's see what I can find...

Old Pulteney 13 Year (SMWS 52.36 "Shades of Black")

This part two of my Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) journey with Old Pulteney - the first bottle, I really didn't care for. This one is filed under their "oily and coastal" category, nicknamed "Shades of Black" (oooooh) and aged for 11 years in ex-bourbon casks, then finished for 2 years in a first-fill ex-PX hogshead. This is similar to the previous bottle, which was categorized as "Sweet, Fruity, and Mellow." In that bottle, I felt the essential character of the Old Pulteney spirit was lost. I am therefore heartened to see this listed as oily, coastal. This is presented at 59.2% (excellent!). Let's explore...

Bunnahabhain Toiteach a Dha (NAS)

It's been ~7 years since I last tried the Bunnahbain Toiteach ("Smoky" in Gaelic) - since then, Bunnahabhain has released this new version ("a Dha" meaning Two). This is rumored to be quite heavily peated (55 ppm?) and aged in Manzanilla sherry casks, comes with No Age Statement from distillery Bunnahabhain. We may not know how old it is, but it's un-chill-filtered, un-colored, and presented at a decent 46.3% ABV. How is it?

Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie 20/181 (NAS)

I've taken quite a liking to Bruichladdich. I really enjoyed their Port Charlotte 10 Year, as well as their Rockside Farm, and their Islay Barley (which was both challenging and rewarding). I once had The Classic Laddie when it was a 10 year age statement.

Aberlour 12 Year

It's been a LONG time since I've had a non-cask strength Aberlour - I don't even remember what the signature notes are. The last Aberlour I had was the 10 Year (now discontinued), which I had in Madagascar (!). This 12 year offering, bottled at a disappointing 40%, is matured by "double cask" - sherry casks and bourbon casks married together after 12 years apart. As for the taste... well, let's find out:

Dailuaine 12 Year (SMWS 41.139 "A Complex Character")

Ah.... my beloved Dailuaine. Right up there with Ardmore on my pantheon of "my favorite underdog drams."  This bottle comes from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) and is bottle code 41.139, nicknamed "A Complex Character." 12 years matured in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, bottled at a wonderful 60.9% ABV. Let's see how the usual Dailuaine "watermelon" note comes across...

Ardbeg Arrrrrrrdbeg! (NAS)

"Arrrrrrrdbeg!" is Ardbeg's special yearly committee release for 2021, to celebrate the retirement of distillery manager Mickey Heads. Ardbeg styles this his "special bottle of grog," and it's been matured entirely for XXX? years in ex-rye barrels. That's right - amid all of the aged Ardbeg releases lately, this is a No Age Statement release. This comes in at a very nice 51.8% ABV. Let's see how the typical Ardbeg profile fares when subjected to all-rye treatment...

Glen Scotia 10 Year (SMWS 93.151 "Members Remember Embers")

I jumped on this the moment I heard about it - a Glen Scotia (from Campbeltown) lightly peated and nicknamed "Members Remember Embers" by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS)?? Automatic purchase. This is aged for 10 years in 1st fill ex-bourbon casks, no chill filtration, no coloring. Let's see how delectable Glen Scotia comes across when peated...

Port Charlotte 10 Year

It's been some time since I reviewed anything from Bruichladdich's heavily peated Port Charlotte imprint. I've had their Scottish Barley and the now-discontinued Peat Project (which I didn't care for). This time around it's their core 10 year bottling, which is peated to about 40 ppm, according to their website. Also from their website: 65% 1st fill American whiskey, 25% 2nd fill French wine, and 10% 2nd fill American whiskey. Bourbon? Rye? 100% malted? Who knows what they mean by that. Bottled at a nice 50% ABV (take notes, competitors!) with no chill filtration or coloring. Let's see what we have here...

Bunnahabhain Stiuireadair (NAS)

Finally - a Bunnahabhain I love! I respect the 12 year and Toiteach, but this bottle... I loved. It's no age statement (meaning: very, very young), and matured in a mix of first- and second-fill sherry casks (almost certainly it's predominantly second-fill), no chill-filtration, no coloring, bottled at a nice 46.3% ABV. Gaelic note: the name means "Helmsman" and refers to the man at the wheel on every bottle of Bunnahabhain. Apparently this will partially replace the 12 Year in stores. Let's see what I found:

Edradour Caledonia 12 Year

Edradour 12 Year is nicknamed "Caledonia" after a song by Scotsman Dougie MacLean, who helped select the whisky from the Edradour casks as well.  Matured in ex-bourbon casks for 7-8 years and then transferred to ex-Oloroso casks for the last 4-5 years, it's bottled at 46% ABV with no chill-filtration or coloring. Let's see what Scotland's smallest distillery can do with two extra years in the cask.

Edradour 10 Year (2020 botting, 43%)

I haven't had an original bottling of Edradour in a long time, which seems impossible, but it's true. My old review is from 7 years ago, and is bottled at a thinner 40% (boo). This bottle of 10 Year (and thanks to Rob Martin for the sample) is 43%, a little more robust. Ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks. Let's take another look.

Auchroisk 7 Year (SMWS 95.44 "Something to Mull Over")

I loved my last bottle of Auchroisk from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) - also a 7 year, it was ex-bourbon for 5 years and re-racked into a refill red wine barrique for the final two years. The result was wild, and packed with flavor (although terribly imbalanced). So when I saw another bottle come up, this one 4 years ex-bourbon and 3 years ex-red wine barrique, I was curious all over again, and jumped on it.

Saturday, February 27, 2021

Craigellachie 13 Year (SMWS 44.138 "The Pink Lady Makes Pastry")

I have a particular fondness for certain malts - Glenfarclas is one, Ardmore is another, and Craigellachie is still another. Craigellachie has a certain distillation process that results in a noticeably "funky" flavor on the back end of a spirit that normally is all apples, all the time... and that funky flavor, you either love or hate. I love it.

Springbank 12 Year Cask Strength (2020 release)

This is the 2020 release of the venerated Springbank cask strength release, which has quite a prominent wine finish: matured for 12 years in 45% sherry cask, 25% bourbon cask, 25% Burgundy casks (!), and 5% port (!!). Very interesting. Bottled without coloring or chill-filtration at 56.1% ABV. I basically adore everything Springbank does, so let's see how this release stacks up.

Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2011

I like Bruichladdich - I have had too little of it. I need to rectify this. Thanks to my friend Rob Martin, who donated this sample of 2011's Islay Barley. Since the sample I've had two more bottles - that's how much I liked this.

Big Peat blend, Cask Strength (Christmas Edition 2019)

Big Peat is a blend from independent bottler Douglas Laing that delivers exactly what you think it does: big, peated whisky. An Islay blend (including Ardbeg! as well as Bowmore, Caol Ila, and Port Ellen - yes, THAT Port Ellen), delivered with craft presentation at 53.7% ABV (Christmas edition only) with no filtration and no coloring. Let's see how Mr. Laing delivers his big peated whisky:

Teacher's Highland Cream (2016 bottling)

Here is a blend I know very little about - Teacher's Highland Cream, made with an usually high amount of single malt - predominantly my beloved Ardmore, owned by the same parent company. Bottled at 43%, and purportedly 45% single malt and 55% grain whisky. Let's explore:

Bunnahabhain 10 Year (Clan Denny)

Another interesting independent bottling - this time it's Islay staple Bunnahabhain, a single cask offering from Clan Denny aged 10 years in a refill hogshead, bottled unfiltered and without coloring at 46%. I am no great fan of Bunnahabhain, so I am hoping this independent lens onto the spirit will sway me towards it. Let's see:

Craigellachie 11 Year (The Classic Cask)

Very little on the net about this bottle - Craigellachie is well known for a rather funky, unusual profile that offers a surprising complexity for a rather low price. This independent bottling from The Classic Cask is non-chill-filtered, uncolored, 11 years in a "refill cask," and bottled at a decent 46%. I can't find any reviews around the web, which is fairly unusual in the robust Scotch scene. How is it?

Braeval 8 Year (SMWS 113.40 "A Sheep in Wolf's Clothing")

Another interesting kooky bottle from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS). This one is from Braeval, a distillery that funnels most of its spirit into Chivas Regal. This is aged 8 years in a second-fill barrel, and bottled at an eye-watered 63.8%. Let's explore this young and sprightly spirit that is deemed to be "A sheep in wolf's clothing."

Glen Moray 14 Year (SMWS 35.277 "Waffle Stacking Ecstasy")

Another Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) bottling of a rather underrated distillery, Glen Moray. The last bottle I had was most interesting, even if it wasn't quite my cup of tea (or scones, as the case may be). But this one got rave reviews during the release video (shout out to Jenna Elie), and I'm super curious. It's aged 14 years in a refill ex-bourbon hogshead, and bottled at 53.7% ABV. Nicknamed "Waffle Stacking Ecstasy." Let's see what Glen Moray and SMWS have for us today:

Lost Distillery Company: Lossit (Second Look)

The Lost Distillery Company's goal is to blend whiskies together with the goal of approximating a distillery which no longer exists - apparently they do extensive research to facilitate their blending. With this bottle they are trying to "recreate" the old Lossit distillery on Islay. See my EARLIER REVIEW. I recently stumbled across a second bottle of this stuff (they are relatively uncommon in my area), and wanted to see how it held up to my memory. Let's see what the Lossit spirit might have tasted like, at 43% ABV...

Glenfarclas 21 Year

Continuing my "old Glenfarclas" series of reviews, which left off with the 17 year, here comes the next logical extension of the series ... the 21 year. Bottled at 43%, natural colored, chill-filtered, and matured in ex-Oloroso sherry casks. How is it? Let's find out.

Hatozaki Small Batch Japanese Blended Whisky

I bought this on a whim because it was new to me and on sale. No idea what to expect - a blend made with 100% malted grain, a combination of bourbon, sherry, and Mizunara oak casks, 46% ABV, combination of import spirit (!) and native Japanese, named after a lighthouse. And yes, Japanese whisky is in a weird sort of gray zone wherein they can import whisky from other places, age it in Japan, and then export it as Japanese whisky. It's not exactly a secret, but they don't shout it from the roof either.

Benriach 9 Year (SMWS 12.47 "Cutting the Cake")

Here is a delightful bottle of BenRiach, aged 9 years in 2nd fill ex-Bourbon barrels, offered as "Cutting the Cake" from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS). I have no previous experience with BenRiach, but after sampling this I definitely will look into them more deeply. The core spirit here is obvious high quality and full of flavor. Offered at 58.5% ABV, part of the SMWS "Sweet, Fruity, and Mellow" series... Let's explore...

Caol Ila 11 Year (SMWS 53.345 "Industrial Chimney Soot")

Another great expression of Caol Ila to review - always a treat. This is another Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottling, nicknamed "Industrial Chimney Soot," and aged for 11 years in refill ex-bourbon hogsheads. Bottled at 58.1%. Here are the facts (and impressions):

Allt-a-Bhainne 7 Year (SMWS 108.27 "Nice to Meat You")

This is easily the weirdest, kookiest, strangest Scotch I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. And it was a pleasure - I actually enjoyed this bottle quite a bit - but I admit, this is definitely not for everyone. This is a Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) bottling of Chivas blend mainstay Allt-a-Bhainne (alta ven?)... you can tell it's SMWS from the absolutely terrible pun "Nice to Meat You." It's a peated Speyside (lightly peated, I'd say), bottled at a VERY stiff 66.3% ABV, and aged for 7 years in 2nd fill ex-bourbon barrels. Let's explore this wild young little thing:

Friday, January 15, 2021

Inchmurrin 13 Year (SMWS 112.73 "Sweet and Savory Excitement")

Another lottery bottle (for Burns Night 2021) from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS), this one is from the Inchmurrin imprint of Loch Lomond distillery (as near as I can tell). I know nothing about Loch Lomond or any of its imprints, but I learned when researching this review that they are the only distillery that makes both single malt and grain whisky at the same facility. Inchmurrin-branded bottles seem to review better than the core Loch Lomond bottles.

Laphroaig 9 Year (SMWS 29.272 "Fire Your Engines")

My last review of the cursed, haunted, evil year that was 2020! So I saved an interesting one - an independent bottling of Laphroaig, which don't seem to come up on the market very often. This one is aged in bourbon barrels (no funny business with reracking into sherry casks, wine casks, etc.) for 9 years and bottled at a healthy 57.5%. Laphroaig is Laphroaig... right? This comes from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, is coded 29.272, and nicknamed Fire Your Engines.

Tuesday, December 29, 2020

Old Pulteney 13 Year (SMWS 52.35 "North Meets South")

Another curious offering from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society - an Old Pulteney which spent 11 years in ex-bourbon barrels, only to be re-racked into first fill PX casks (!), resulting in a most unusual 13 year Scotch. Old Pulteney is generally known for its high salinity, a rather salty dram. How will this combine with the sherry influence? Let's find out. Bottled at 58.9% and nicknamed "North Meets South."

Monday, December 28, 2020

Bunnahabhain 6 Year (SMWS 10.194 "Maritime Marshmallows")

Here is another curiosity from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS). This one is a Bunnahabhain that has spent 6 years in a re-charred hogshead, and was bottled at 58.5%. I always think of Bunnahabhain as one of the delicate Islay offerings, so it was strange to see it married to a re-charred cask. The SMWS nicknamed this one "Maritime Marshmallows." Let's see what the result was.

Yellow Spot Irish Whisky

I've always wanted to try Yellow Spot, but never had the opportunity until I picked up some when leaving Dublin after a wonderful trip. Triple distilled, aged 12 years in a combination of bourbon, sherry, and Malaga casks, single pot still, and bottled at 46% ABV. The vaunted Yellow Spot - how does it measure up?

Glen Moray 12 Year (SMWS 35.266 "Traditional Butterscotch Fudge")

At the same Scotch tasting where I had my beloved Tomintoul, I also had a delightful 9 year Glen Moray that was my girlfriend's favorite - full of waxy oranges and delicious tea notes. So I was delighted to find that the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) featured several offerings from Glen Moray. I chose the one coded 35.266, named "Traditional Butterscotch Fudge," and aged for 12 years in first-fill bourbon barrel. No coloring, no filtering. Bottled at 57.4% ABV.

Tomintoul 10 Year (Exclusive Malts, Second Review)

At the fabled Impex Scotch tasting that changed my opinion of independent bottlings (and several distilleries, particularly), my favorite was a 10 year Tomintoul, which positively dripped with honey and marshmallow. Over the years I've sourced a couple more bottles, and I think it's time to revisit this hallowed dram and see if my memory actually aligns with the liquid. After all, it came in the middle of a series of cask strength samples... for example, this is 56.2% ABV.

Glenfarclas 17 Year

I'm a big fan of Glenfarclas 105, the cask strength no-age-statement version of their whisky, which is matured in oloroso sherry casks. This results in an unusually rich and quirky spirit, almost funky, and one that I took a shine to. Lately I've been diving deep in the world of independent bottles, so I thought I would take a breath of air from the world of official bottlings, and explore Glenfarclas a bit more.

Thursday, November 12, 2020

Tomintoul 7 Year (SMWS 89.11 "A Kraftwerk Orange")

One of my favorite drams of all time was a Tomintoul - an independent bottling (Exclusive Malts, RIP) that I sampled at a tasting in Washington DC. That Tomintoul, a 10 year, oozed honey and marshmallow for days, and was outrageously tasty.

Battle Axe 8 Year Islay Blend (SMWS)

This is another Scotch Malt Whisky Society offering - this time an 8 year Islay blend. No information on what constitutes the blend, unfortunately. Bottled at 50% ABV, no coloring, no filtering.

Saturday, November 7, 2020

Caol Ila 12 Year (SMWS 53.338 "The Quay to Success")

I am a long-time fan of Caol Ila, the largest (by far) distillery on Islay. Although much of Caol Ila's output is unpeated and sent to the blender, they do release a nice little 12 Year official bottling, along with a few other official releases I've never actually seen in the wild.

Friday, November 6, 2020

Ledaig 10 Year

Ledaig is the heavily peated imprint from Tobermory, the distillery on the Isle of Mull.  I've actually never had Tobermory itself, but have always heard good things about Ledaig - namely "it's a very unusual kind of peated whisky." Well, aged for 10 years in bourbon barrels, non-chill-filtered, and presented at 46.3% ABV, let's see how unusual it is...
