Springbank 10 (Second Take)
I just picked up another bottle of Springbank 10 after a few years away, and wanted to review it anew, since my memory of the original had faded a bit. Matured in a mix of sherry and bourbon casks, and bottled at 46% ABV.
Nose: Lemon, strongly. Pear. Grass, menthol. Light cereal and vanilla. Cherries. Over time, a powerful peat scent emerges. Brown sugar. Rubbery, sour phenols.
Mouthfeel: Light, oily.
Palate: Lemon pepper, orange rind, pine, peat, apple, light sooty diesel smoke, burnt apricots or apricot stones. Very fruity! And a developing spiced wax, like cinnamon pears cooked on the stove. Delectable.
Finish: Long and peppery, some smoke and fading fruit and peat.
Verdict: What a winner! Just as good as it always was, this is a really intriguing marriage of fruit and sooty peat, perfectly balanced, and completely delicious. Almost TOO drinkable. A completely successful dram.
