Deanston 20 Year Oloroso Cask

My good friend Rob Martin let me taste this one... and what a journey it ended up being! Deanston is a Highland Scotch, matured 20 years in ex-oloroso sherry casks, bottled at 55.3% ABV.

Nose: Sulfur! Strong sulfurous notes intersect with every aspect of the nose. Malt...and sulfur. Red fruit... and sulfur. Raisins... and sulfur. Sulfur from first to last, like a massively concentrated version of the Craigallachie nose.

Mouthfeel: Thin and silky.

Palate: More sulfur throughout. Hard to even tell what else is going on - this is so thoroughly tainted with a very thick sulfur note, it dominates every aspect.

Finish: Short, resinous.

Verdict: This is a very difficult whisky to review because of the intense sulfur note that winds its way from nose to finish.
