Glengarry 12 Year

Yet *another* imprint from Loch Lomond! This one is particularly interesting to me - and thank you so much to Meghan Burns for this lovely housewarming gift - as it's aged 12 years in bourbon, refill bourbon, and re-charred casks, and bottled at a very respectable 46% (thank you Loch Lomond!). No word on chill filtration or coloring, though - I assume both are present.

The official notes are somewhat sparse: "Floral notes of peach blossom, pear, golden barley, and vanilla." Other reviews around the net describe a tropical fruit cup, with waxy vanilla and rich malt.

After having a couple great single cask bottlings of Loch Lomond (Inchmurin and Imchmoan bottles from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society), I have renewed respect for this distillery. I am particularly hoping for some grassy notes, and perhaps a little smoke from the re-char barrels. Let's see how it does!

Nose: Well, the official notes are right on the money: slightly sour peach, spicy poached pear, malted barley sugars, and a slight but enticing fresh cut grass note that I quite like. I don't get so much of the vanilla, but I do get a bit of candle wax.

Mouthfeel: Medium, oily.

Palate: Interesting - lemongrass, malted barley, lemon candy, mango, smoke, vanilla finally makes a distinct appearance, and pear skin - not the flesh, but the semi-bitter skin. Also some wood in there on the back end of the palate.

Finish: Smoke, pear, wood, mango. Nice finish, medium in length, fades out gracefully.

Verdict: A perfect summer sipper. Bright, refreshing, with a lovely malt-and-grass body that pairs well with nice splashes of fruit. The smoke was a nice encounter as well. Recommended as a good hot weather dram.
