A brief review of a sample of this Balvenie single barrel 12 year old I had with Rob Martin - quite nice stuff! Ex-bourbon cask, bottled at 47.8% ABV (interesting), let's just dig right in:
Nose: Ripe apple and pear, light smoke, leafy greens, malt barley.
Mouthfeel: Medium across the board.
Palate: A typical and rather mild Speyside with a hint of smoke on top: apple, pear, orange, lemon zest, malt barley sugars, ethanol. After a time, something like white grapes or sultanas shows up and lasts through the finish.
Finish: Sweet smoke, fruit, and malt. Sometimes grape acids.
Verdict: A very solid offering from Balvenie. Doesn't shake my tree necessarily, but I wish more distilleries did something like this - giving the consumer some kind of single barrel experience at a reasonable price. Worth your time if it cost isn't too high.
