Guest Review: Glenmorangie The Original (10 Year)

Huzzah! What have we here? A guest review from my friend Joe Kano! From time to time I solicit my friends to submit reviews of Scotch they have tried for this blog. So here I submit unedited and in full glory, Joe's review of Glenmorangie's The Original - their 10 Year expression:

***

Glenmorangie, The Original is a single malt scotch whiskey.  This scotch was a gift from Evan as congratulations because my wife and I are expecting our first child.  I was planning on saving it until the baby was born but just couldn't wait to try this whiskey.  One of the most interesting things about Glenmorangie is the history behind the brand, which I won't delve into here but is worth checking out on their website.  Okay, on to the review...

Nose:  As a scotch newbie, the smell was definitely different from what I expected.  I thought it was going to smell smokey like Black Label, but it is a much sweeter smell.  The bottle claims to have a "floral spirit" so I closed my eyes and tried to imagine a bouquet of flowers as I took another sniff.  The scent does seem similar to a bouquet of roses though much stronger.

Mouthfeel:  I think it has a medium consistency.

Palate: Spices...

Finish: The finish has a little bit of bite, but I like that the flavor lingers.  There is a slight smokey flavor on the back of the tongue when swallowing that stays.  After a few seconds, only the sweeter flavors remain.

Verdict: A very good scotch.  This has definitely opened me up to other kinds of whiskey besides Johnny Walker, and has shown me that there can be more flavors than just smokey.
