Johnnie Walker 18 Year Blend

A good friend bought this bottle to drink with me after a rough day; it was much appreciated. Over the course of a few months, we emptied the thing steadily, and I accumulated tasting notes.

Johnnie Walker is, of course, probably the most recognizable blended Scotch in the world. They are more subject than most to overly fancy marketing - the 18 Year used to be Platinum, which itself used to be Gold (eye roll) - but also generally deliver a decent experience for the dollar; I particularly like their Green bottling.

The 18 Year is made up of ~18 different whiskies, including Blair Athol, Cardhu, Glen Elgin, and Auchroisk. I love Auchroisk! Let's see how old whiskies from these distilleries, mixed together (possibly with old grain whisky?) comes out...

Nose: Very muted. *VERY* muted. It takes ages to open up into something lightly floral, lightly fragrant, hints of caramel, hints of orchard fruit (apple, especially pear). Very little complexity (or strength) on the nose. Super soft on the nose.

Mouthfeel: Thin, but silky.

Palate: Much more robust than the nose: some smoke, some oil, definite caramel, some ginger and apple slices. All fairly soft, all fairly balanced. Nothing wild here, nothing offensive. At 40% ABV, this is super easy on the nose and mouth, and goes down simply.

Finish: Exceedingly short, as with many blends: wisps of oily smoke, the merest hint of oak char.

Verdict: I still prefer the peatier Green Label, but this is very nice... almost no nose or finish, but quite a pleasant palate that tastes some nice flavors and presents them in a pretty direct, simple, soft way.
