Tomatin 12 Year (New Bottling)

This new edition of Tomatin (post-2015) is now a blend of bourbon and sherry casks, bottled at 43% ABV, and presumably colored and chill-filtered.

Nose: Already a major step ahead of the old bottling: no buttered popcorn, no rancid butter. Instead, we have much more balance - vanilla and malt from the bourbon casks, dried red fruit from the sherry casks. It's not a huge nose, nor a complex one, but it's balanced and pleasant. With some water, it brings out some baking spices which enrich things nicely, but also hints at the rancid note from the old bottle - it never actually appears, but you get unpleasant whiffs of it.

Mouthfeel: Decidedly on the thin side, but not mortally so.

Palate: Bourbon takes over on the palate - oak tannins, vanilla, and malt dominate. Hints of sherry in the corners of your mouth, but only hints. Water calms down the bourbon dominance and very slightly pushes the red fruit forward.

Finish: Another very short finish, like the old bottling - a brief burst of oak and then it's gone. It's the same with water.

Verdict: This is much better than the pre-rebranding bottle, but still rather thin stuff. A balanced nose, a bourbon-leaning palate, and no finish ... that's what you're getting. Honestly, I'd save up and spend your money on something with a little more character.
