Glen Scotia 10 Year (SMWS 93.151 "Members Remember Embers")

I jumped on this the moment I heard about it - a Glen Scotia (from Campbeltown) lightly peated and nicknamed "Members Remember Embers" by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS)?? Automatic purchase. This is aged for 10 years in 1st fill ex-bourbon casks, no chill filtration, no coloring. Let's see how delectable Glen Scotia comes across when peated...

Nose: Whoa, that's interesting. Gauze... the smell of newly unwrapped gauze. Freeze dried/dessicated apples, apple cores. Iodine. Unusual nose, for sure. Both fruity and peaty/medicinal. The peat is quite sweet and merges well with the fruit.

Mouthfeel: Oily, medium.

Palate: Sweeter than the nose would imply. Sweet peat, lavender bouquet, antiseptic, breakfast sausage (!), red jelly. Unusual and quite delectable on the tongue.

Finish: You can definitely tell it's peated here - the smoke stays on the tongue quite some time. Peat and oak tannins comprise the majority of the finish here, with smoke intertwining and outlasting both.

Verdict: This is an unusual but worthwhile expression of Glen Scotia, whose 15 year I find irresistible. With peat added, new flavors emerge, and the classical "Campbeltown funk" is lost in the mix ... but the things added are worth exploring, for sure. This is interesting, and if you find some where you are - try it!
