I haven't had an original bottling of Edradour in a long time, which seems impossible, but it's true. My old review is from 7 years ago, and is bottled at a thinner 40% (boo). This bottle of 10 Year (and thanks to Rob Martin for the sample) is 43%, a little more robust. Ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks. Let's take another look.
Nose: Sherry fruits, to start - raisins and cherries. Something like wet leaves, maybe. Honey, and perhaps a touch of smoke?
Mouthfeel: Medium, but on the lighter side of medium for sure.
Palate: More sherry influence here, red fruits. Smoke on the palate is quite nice, balanced with the sweet fruit. The wet leaves on the nose resolve here as moss. And a nice vanilla influence that goes hand in hand with the developing oak influence.
Finish: Definitely more smoke on this finish, along with black pepper and wood tannins.
Verdict: Quite a lovely little whisky, and quite complex for 10 years and 43%. There is a certain earthiness here that I quite like, that undercuts the sherry sweetness and the smoke's astringency both. Worth your time.
