Lost Distillery Company: Lossit (Second Look)

The Lost Distillery Company's goal is to blend whiskies together with the goal of approximating a distillery which no longer exists - apparently they do extensive research to facilitate their blending. With this bottle they are trying to "recreate" the old Lossit distillery on Islay. See my EARLIER REVIEW. I recently stumbled across a second bottle of this stuff (they are relatively uncommon in my area), and wanted to see how it held up to my memory. Let's see what the Lossit spirit might have tasted like, at 43% ABV...

Nose: Peat, light iodine, barley sugar, green peppers, hot peppers. After some time in the glass, shag tobacco and a very distinct black tea. Quite an interesting nose!

Mouthfeel: Quite viscous and thick.

Palate: Smoking hay and hot peppers! Cooling tea. What an interesting palate. It aligns very, very closely with my initial review - so at least their blend recipe hasn't changed much if at all.

Finish: A rather short finish except for the hot peppers (which carry on a while) and smoke (which has medium length). There is a certain vague cedar plank aspect here but it doesn't last long.

Verdict: If you ask The Lost Distillery Company, then Lossit Islay whisky had an earthy (straw, hay, green peppers), spicy (hot peppers), coastal (iodine, salt) profile. Maybe someday someone will really resurrect the distillery - Islay whiskies sell like hotcakes. Until then, this is the closest we will come, and it's a very interesting blend - nothing else like it - with some really attractive qualities. Worth exploring.
